Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core : big ideas in a small screen

Memang katanya “hanya” sebuah game, hanya permainan belaka. Namun gw selalu percaya, bahwa kita bisa belajar dari apa saja. Gw belajar dari game ini tentang mimpi dan kehormatan. Apa yang lo pelajari dari hobi lo?

In popular, gamy includes cervid, coney, unbroken swine, score, antelope and to the writer exotic ant-eater, aviation fox, squirrels or still bats (eg. bat soup is a sustenance in Cambodia) which can be popular in both countries.

Ducks at Sharks Tonight

Head Coach Randy Carlyle has guarded tonight’s lineup as if it were a regular season game. The only news that’s been squeezed out from him has been that Ryan Getzlaf will most likely not play tonight because playing him in “back-to-back (games) wouldn’t be smart.” It’s good that the Ducks are being cautious with the big center, but look for him to play on Sunday night against the Kings

Also look for Carlyle to get Kyle Calder, Logan MacMillan, Troy Bodie, Ryan Donally, Erik Christensen, and Andrew Ebbett some ice time tonight as the coaching staff makes final decisions on the regular season roster. NHL teams can only carry 23 players at the start of the regular season.

The Ducks also announced that they’ve sent defencemen Mark Mitera down to San Antonio of the AHL. As I noted in this post, Mitera was only with the Ducks to get a taste of the NHL and not challenge for a roster spot. The move leaves the Ducks with nine defencemen remaining on their training camp roster. If you saw last night’s game you probably think that Brendan Mikkelson is a lock for one of the final spots, and that Luca Sbisa will most likely take the other.

In other news, former Duck winger Rob Niedermayer signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the New Jersey Devils. I wrote about the importance of Nidermayer as part of the checking line in this article earlier today. He is expected to play as a Center on the third line. Once again, the Devils and Ducks each have a Niedermayer on their side, though this time it is reversed. Ducks fans would more than welcome a return trip to the Stanley Cup Finals for both teams.

Sorry fans…no TV for tonight’s game.

Halo 3 ODST Skull Locations and Achievements (Guide)

Halo 3: ODST is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft. There are audio logs scattered all over the place, and piecing together events from the perspective of an innocent bystander during the invasion adds emotional depth to the situation. There are still enemies waiting to pounce, and you’ll have to don your night-vision goggles so you aren’t caught unaware.

Red Faction Guerrilla

ISCRIVITI GRATIS AI NOSTRI FEED!

    ARTESEGAME.WORDPRESS.COM

Bob The Game Tutorial Idea

In school today I was thinking about making a little start of game tutorial for this game.

It could show you how to walk around, jump, attack, transform, etc.

It could also start explaining the game’s backstory and such.

Sadly, I didn’t remember that I thought of this time just now, so I didn’t end up working on it when I got home =/

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to turn this into something tangible eventually.

That’s all for now,

Toll!

Game Trailer - Halo 3: ODST (Firefight)

On the verge of the start of what will be video-game geekfest ‘09 (or what mortals call the holiday period) an entire host of games will be coming out for all to love and enjoy.

One of those games comes out today. Originally set as an expansion pack it has become its own entity (or so Bungie say) and thus created a good deal of buzz. Well enough to warrant midnight launches of the game around the world.

I too am sucked into this ‘Halo’ universe and shall be purchasing the game soon enough. It took all my power to resist my geek like urges and purchase it tonight. So what I’ll leave you with is one aspect of ODST that is drawing me in like a moth to a flame. Firefight.
Kick ass.

Knights of the Old Republic II

Game: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II

Genre: RPG

Medium: XBox

Year Released: 2005

Plot Synopsis: The last Jedi returns to known space after the Jedi Civil War, he (or she) assembles a group of friends/ followers and attempts to destroy the Sith Lords roaming the galaxy, whilst simultaneously trying to save the future of the republic.

This is easily one of my favourite games on the XBox and possibly of all time. But then again I have a love for Star wars that will never be surpassed and combine that with my love for RPGs and how could you go wrong?! *cough* galaxies *cough*

But otherwise, this is a solid RPG with a powerful compelling plot and characters that you whether just want to hurt or save, which is useful as they’ve given you the choice. Yes as with the first KOTOR they give you choice of being Dark or Light side, or in the middle, or darting between the two or if you really want you can be as nice as you like but still fry people with lightning. Up to you.

The choice between the dark and light side of the force is what makes this game so replayable. different thign happen if you are evil to if you are good and vice versa, also different things happen if you are female as to whether you are male. This is one thing that has got me playing the game over 20 times and everytime I play it, something I’ve never seen before happens, be it a new piece of conversation, a new area or a new box etc.

So yeah when you level up, you can apply points to attributes, points to feats, points to skills and points to powers (if you are a Jedi), of course you don’t get points in every category every time you level up, but as long as you focus on aparticular skill you can quickly get it high enough that you dont need to worry about it for quite a while.

Of course none of you care about that all you want is the powers right? Well they have added more powers since the first game but few of them are worth using. Powers like Battle Meditation and Force Aura are best left on your supporting Jedi characters whilst you fry everyone within a 10 metre radius with Force Storm. But then again, powers like Force Speed or Force Heal are best kept because often you will be left without the help of your compadres and you will need to heal.

At the start of the game you choose Jedi Guardian, Jedi Sentinel or Jedi Consular as your starting class. This determines how many kill, feat and power points you get once you level up. The Jedi Consular for example will occasionally drop you with 2 Force power points when the other classes only get one. This does of course mean that towards the end you have more powers then you ever actually use. At the end few my game I just walk in the middle of my foes and use Force Storm repeatedly until they are dead. Occasionally use Drain if my health is low. Thats about it. But then again, using Force Confusion on a foe so he fights his friend is also mildly entertaining

Your choice of Light or Dark side, male or female, will also affect which followers are attracted to your cause. If you are male you get the Handmaiden because she wants to sex you up. If you are female you get the disciple because hes a know-it-all whiny bitch. If you are dark side you get Hanharr the mighty Wookie. If you are light side you get Mira, whose only redeeming feature is she can become a Jedi. If you can be assed to try.

One of the best things about the followers is how many of them can be trained in the force if you get to know them well enough. Once your entire team is assembled you will have ten followers, 2 of which come force trained, 3 of which are droids so cannot be trained but others it varies. If you are dark side you can train 3 of the 5 to become Jedi (But it is harder to get them to like you if you are evil, oh morals you sneaky bastard) Whereas if you are light side, 4 of the 5 can be trained and are more likely too as well.

OK its not perfect, the graphics may not be up to scratch and there isn’t much of an improvement form the first game in terms of visuals and there may be a few glitches here and there, boxes closing immediately after opening, some slight clipping problems, sometimes the audio does not fit the “voice acting” and occasionally NPCs standing directly in your way and refusing to move. But these are only minor problems and do not detract from the experience.

All in all a bloody good game, I’d play it again and again. Oh wait, I do

Is There Room For Magazines?

After recently stumbling upon the blog A Life Well Wasted, the brain child of freelance journalist Robert Ashley, I began wondering about the video game magazine industry. Ashley had picked up on the death of Electronic Gaming Monthly, talking to various ex-editors and contributors about what it was like to work on the publication in it’s golden age.

It got me thinking about the way we consume our gaming journalism. Before the internet, magazines were king; it was the only way gamers could find out news and reviews of the latest titles. I used to read my copies cover to cover, taking in every word before I was comfortable lending them out to friends. Video Games hadn’t become mainstream enough to be included in rental stores, so the only way I could check out a game was to buy it at full price. Magazines seemed to be the only way of knowing if a title was worth your hard earned pocket money. We’re very sceptical of the opinion of reviewers and critics these days, but I think back then gamers were much more trusting.

The internet has of course, blown our past time out of proportion. Video games are now socially acceptable, so we no longer need magazines for a sense of community or belonging. Excluding the enormous wealth of enthusiast blogs and reviews, there are still dozens of gaming sites creating journalism that can be accessed for free. Advertising is becoming stricter, but as consumers we now have access to features, reviews and cheats on demand. The issues revolving around ‘Tips and Hints’ already seem archaic in the wake of walkthrough sites such as Gamefaqs.

Publishers used to justify increasing the cost of a magazine by offering freebies. The most important, of course, was the demo disc. The only way to play a demo was to buy the corresponding magazine, so I would always rush out to buy an issue when it featured a title I was interested in . A magazine would pride themselves on the exclusivity of offering a particular game or video first. Now though? We get our demo’s for free with the click of a button on Xbox Live or PSN.

So this leads to the title of my post. With so many websites offering unique, quality content, is there any need for video game magazines? I would like to believe so. Writing for the internet is a different craft to print, due to the nature of scan reading and reduced space on the world wide web. The magazine can often have a larger word count to allow analysis and discussion, spreading across multiple pages and interviews. With so many distractions on the internet gamers are quick to lose interest in an online review, absently clicking on a new tab or their latest reply on messenger. When you’re sat down with a magazine your attention is a commitment, often rewarded with a more engrossing read.

You might look cool reading the news on you’re iPhone, but for on the go practicality paper media is still the way forward. A magazine can often be a lifesaver when you’re sitting on an aeroplane, waiting for the bus or just bored on the toilet. Still simple to stuff in a bag, show to your friend or hold onto for safe keeping. It’ll be a shame if we all end up staring at tiny LCD screens for our long commuter journeys.

Or maybe i’m just being too traditional. Perhaps the internet really is king and video game magazines as we know it are about to die out. I’m not trying to say they’re all good; here in England at least half on the rack of Borders are rubbish. There are still a few gems though, like Edge and GamesTM… which I just hope can still find a place in our ever changing hobby.

An Intense Kid Gamer.

I’ve been having these weird thoughts lately… Is any of this real or not?

I admit it, I said a few lines from Kingdom Hearts in the beginning of this blog.  Its weird though that many intense , hardcore, and professional gamers play a lot of M rated games (Mature) like, GTA, Counter Strike, Quake, etc. I got banned from playing those games… My parents say its too violent (Yeah, its true) So… I wanted to play like a pro but without those games. I’m still in the process of getting a PS3. I was waiting until it got a lot more cheaper, but yuhp they made a quick price cut.

I’ve started to game more just a week ago I’ve been done with Kingdom Hearts 1, 2, and Final Mix. Just so you know, I will play like a pro without those violent games (but I still play Quake Live, its non-bloody) I play E-T rated games. Here’s some of my consoles:

  • PS2
  • PSP
  • Nintendo DS Lite
  • GameBoy Advance SP
  • Wii (We, I mean my family with my cousins and cousins’ family, play it in my grandmother’s house.)

I play also some MMOs like WoW, RuneScape, andsome Filipino created MMOs like Ragnarok, RAN Online, O2 Jam, Flyff, and more. Its nice to play those games without too much blood and horror. Its a kid friendly game world there are more games for kids out there unlike those Counter Strike games. May I ask you guys on what I really should get a PS3 or an Xbox 360? Ducks versus Vancouver Highlights

If you weren’t at the game versus Vancouver last night, NHL.com has provided some highlights like they did for the Phoenix game. Click here to access the video.

The first half of the video is an interview with a tanner-than-usual Joffrey Lupul. If you want to find Lupul during the off-season, look no further than the beach (he makes his residence in Newport Beach, if you were wondering).

Besides Lupul’s dark skin, this video brings up two points. First, if they have cameras rolling in the arena, why don’t they broadcast it at least online? I know there was an online feed which I did not post (sorry everyone…I’ll be sure to post it next time), but it should still be made available through the NHL or Ducks websites.

Second, if they’re going to show highlights, why don’t they show a proper highlight reel? One minute of video that skips from one fight to another before we can see two punches is quite useless. We’re hockey fans. We want to see hockey games a lot more than interviews. When will they figure it out?

Best Social Media Games

All work and no play makes social media a dull boy, right? With applications becoming more and more popular across every platform, we though we’d share some of our favorites:

Twitter:

- We’ve previously listed a few of our favorites here, but we’ve come across another we really like: TweetBricks. A cool twist on an old game (it’s basically Tetris) but customizable to your friends, followers, mentions, hashtags, another user, or everyone. Try not getting addicted to this one.

Facebook:

- It’s currently the most popular application on Facebook, with more than 12 million daily active users (just about all of the Twitterverse, to put it in perspective). We resisted for a while, but we’ve finally started playing FarmVille. It’s somewhat hypnotic, as only so much playing can be done at one time and it’s a bit repetitive, but yet we keep logging back in each day to play.

Chrome:

- We actually have yet to try this one, but Mashable has posted about being able to play old Nintendo games on Chrome. We’ve tried emulators before, but if it really runs 10 times faster in Chrome like Mashable says, they might have some new converts.

What’s your favorite social media-related game or application?

Soda Bottle Bowling

Just as the title suggests bowling with soda bottles as pins! Fun, easy and you along with the kids will have a good time. First head for the recycling bin to find the pins, any sized soda bottle works and I usually try to find an odd number 3 – 7. Then rinse and add a small amount of water in the bottle to help keep them up on the carpet if you plan to play on it. Once those are ready find whatever balls are in your toddler’s toy bin. (It may be fun to try several sizes). Set up the pins in your desired bowling lane and head to the other side of the room. (I put down a line of masking tape to teach the older kids to stay behind the line when they bowl).

Supplies:

  • 3-7 soda empty bottles
  • A small amount of water
  • Tape
  • Toy balls

50 Cent: Blood On The Sand - Review (PS3)

I’m not a 50 Cent fan, like a few of his tracks but never bought an album or anything. So wasn’t sure what to make of Blood On The Sand – especially as his previous game, Bulletproof, was widely condemned as poor.

The story of Blood On The Sand is one of the most ridiculous I’ve ever heard but I suppose is in keeping with the hip hop/rap fantasy these guys peddle.

Fiddy performs a concert in the Middle East but the promoter claims not to have the agreed fee afterwards. Luckily he has a rare diamond encrusted skull instead which Fiddy accepts. Then they get ambushed and the skull is stolen by a militia group. You are then tasked with killing lots of people to retrieve the skull. Yes, really.

While all this is of course pure nonsense, the game itself is actually very playable. A pleasant surprise, as I was expecting something akin to Terminator Salvation with rappers shouting.

I got rappers shouting (there is even a taunt button for Fiddy to use) but the gameplay here was more similar to The Bourne Conspiracy – it even features (more violent) takedowns.

The main story mode clocks in at around 6/7 hours which, although a touch short, isn’t too bad.

It’s not too taxing a game, more of a run and gun than a tactical shooter. There are a few frustrating parts but overall the game is fairly well balanced.

Blood On The Sand is not something I’ll ever play again or really recommend to friends. It was a good laugh and if you’re stuck for something to play this is worth a rent.

A surprise then, one of those rare occasions where a game is actually quite a bit better than you thought it would be. It might not be a world beater but it caters to it’s audience and is accessible for everyone who plays it.

Switching Gears

Well, this week’s visit went off well. Not a lot of design work done, but we did get some issues out of the way. That small problem I mentioned before about us not getting enough cooperative time should hopefully be resolved. We have all agreed to try to keep it at a 3 meeting a week minimum.

On top of that, we have effectively switched gears for a bit. Our main project is still “SoulLess”, but with the ImmUnity contest dead-line looming, we are putting more effort towards getting our entry finished. The artist, Anna, is stopping her work on the SoulLess assets so she can concentrate more on the assets for The Black Arena. Luckily, there are not a lot of assets we actually need. The contest really only calls for a prototype, so we can go bare minimum and still be fine.

The game itself is, for lack of a better word, an RPG-lite. It uses the traditional turn-based/real-time combat system we all grew up with and remember fondly from games like Final Fantasy, but does away with the endless walking, talking, and exploring. The leveling, learning new abilities, and combat are all still there. In truth, that is basically the whole game. I know, I know… not very original, but the game is meant to be more of a “coffee-break” game. Something you can do for a few minutes, and then stop whenever you want to.

Plus, this gives us a chance to work on some of the fundamental code for a true RPG. This will give us a place to jump in at once we start coding for SoulLess. The only problem is the ImmUnity contest calls for complete exclusivity of the winning entry for a year. This, I have a problem with.

I wrote them to clarify, and it turns out my largest worries were true. When they say exclusive, they mean fully exclusive. They want the exclusive rights to the code/scripts/assets, etc. Which means, no re-using the code in a different game, even if the game has a completely different feel, objective, etc. I.e. no building a working turn-based/real-time combat system in The Black Arena, and then just modifying it a bit to use in SoulLess. The two games are about as far apart as two RPGs can be, but lets face it… an RPG combat system is an RPG combat system. Slight variations exist here and there, but that is mostly just tweaking the code to give it a different feel. Still the same code, though.

Not sure what we are going to do about this one. The people at Muse Games say they are willing to work with people on a special circumstance basis, but this is about as reassuring as a robber saying he “might not” shoot you, as long as you give him a good enough reason.

Our choices are not submit The Black Arena, and miss out on a chance for $10,000. Of course, we could always sell The Black Arena on something like BigFish, but that requires us to take it from prototype to finished product before ever seeing a dime. The 10k would have done wonders to get our fledgling studio off the ground. We shall have to see just how much “compromise” Muse Games is willing to make.

As always, wish us luck.

Activision games to bypass consoles

By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot

Posted Sep 14, 2009 4:09 pm PT

CEO reveals plans for “untethered Guitar Hero,” facebook integration, emotionally resonant animation, and taking “all the fun out of making video games.”

During a 45-minute presentation today at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco, Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick covered a substantial amount of ground. For one, the executive explained how he expects Activision games–specifically Guitar Hero–to bypass consoles altogether. The executive also showed off animation technology he hailed as the future of storytelling in games, pegged the next generation of consoles as being two years out or more, and explained openly why he wants a company culture infused with skepticism, pessimism, and fear.

On the Guitar Hero topic, Kotick told analysts and investors about some potentially big changes in store for the rhythm franchise. When asked about a Guitar Hero game that didn’t need a console to operate, Kotick bluntly appraised its benefits.

“I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is equal the playing field a little more and give you some leverage with first parties when it comes to downloadable content and the business model,” Kotick said.

The executive also told attendees to “expect many of our products to be playable independent of a console,” specifically saying he’d been impressed with media hub functionalities shown by 1080p TVs that let users stream content from their PCs. He also suggested a day in not-too-distant future where players’ Facebook profiles will be integrated into Guitar Hero, letting them make songs to share with friends, post high scores or favorite songs on their profile page, and so on.

While games like Guitar Hero have proven popular for the tactile experience of their peripherals, Kotick said Activision is also working to push the envelop in emotional game experiences. He showed the audience a clip of Call of Duty: World at War, saying his friends in the movie industry all react by pointing out how unreal the mouth movement looks. The executive said game makers just haven’t reached a point yet where the mouth movement and facial animation of game characters is good enough to establish a compelling emotional attachment from the player.

To remedy that, Kotick noted a realtime rendering and mouth movement technology Activision has been working on. He showed a clip of the technology, saying it could could represent nothing less than a transformation of the medium. While Kotick said the technology wouldn’t surface until the next generation of games, he did say it would be ready before the next generation of hardware.

Kotick added that publishers don’t take advantage of the full capabilities of today’s hardware, and said it might be some time before the next generation arrives. Typically, console makers give publishing partners about two years’ notice when it plans to introduce new hardware, Kotick said. But so far, the console makers haven’t given him specs or white papers on new hardware, nor have they consulted him on design decisions, leading him to believe their current priority is instead to reduce the cost of each system.

When he wasn’t promoting the company’s games or technology, Kotick was celebrating its laser-like focus on the bottom line. He pointed to changes he implemented in the past as being particularly beneficial, such as designing the employee incentive program so it, “really rewards profit and nothing else.”

“You have studio heads who five years ago didn’t know the difference between a balance sheet and a bed sheet who are now arguing allocations in our CFO’s office pretty regularly,” Kotick said.

He later added, “We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.”

If that sounds like it would create a corporate culture that isn’t all sunshine and hugs, then it’s “mission accomplished” for Kotick. The executive said that he has tried to instill into the company culture “skepticism, pessimism, and fear” of the global economic downturn, adding, “We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression.”

Silverlight + Gyromite = Tile Engine?

A Night of Boredom…

I was reading about Silverlight 3 and its lovely new WriteableBitmap the other day and thought, “I wish i could think of something cool to test that with”. The very next day I found myself playing Gyromite on the NES, and remembering how awesome that game was.

After playing for a while, mostly enjoying the music, I decided that making a web version of Gyromite would be the perfect way for me to try out the WriteableBitmap stuff, as well as generally improving my Silverlight skills. So as if by magic, Silvermite was born!

The Engine So Far

A fair amount of progress has been made so far. I have made a resource manager which loads in all of the resources (big surprise) and caches them, created definition formats for tile sets, maps and sprites, I have decided to go for XML for all of my data formats, mainly because it is quick and easy to create the classes needed to validate/load these files using schemas (more on this in a tutorial later). Of course I have also used WriteableBitmap to display all of this on the screen.

Graphics

I spent several hours pulling the graphics out of the game, tweaking their colours and arranging them into their proper animation sets. I won’t go into the full details of this process, but it involved an emulator and Photoshop. I also won’t get into the legality of emulation here, I own a copy of this game on the NES and I am using the graphics/concept for educational purposes only. Please don’t ask me how/where to get a rom for this game (the answer is eBay).

Resource Manager

Any images loaded using the resource manager are cached to avoid repeated loading. Resources such as sprites and maps are loaded and cached using a resource naming system, for example asking it to load “mainSprites>player” would first check if that has been loaded already, and if not it would load the entire “mainSprites” sheet into the cache before returning the requested sprite.

Tile set Definitions

The tile sets are the simplest structures, consisting of an input image and a set of named and numbers source rectangles. I might possibly add “brushes” into the tile set definitions, allowing me to put whole blocks of tiles into maps in one call, as with the bar supports in Silvermite.

Map Definitions

These get slightly more interesting. First, I have added support for multiple layers (and potentially parallax in the future?). Within each of these layers, tiles are defined either individually or in whole runs. This allows me to define an entire platform almost as easily as a single block. Currently only the static maps are supported, but game objects such as enemies, turnips, player starts and bars will eventually be defined in here. The tiles are loaded in from a tile set specified in the map.

Sprite Definitions

Easily the most complex data format so far. The static sprites are pretty much the same as tile definitions, just a name and a source rectangle. The animated sprites have multiple animations defined.

An animation can be of 4 different types : static, once, loop and ping-pong. “Static” is useful for things such as standing and jumping poses, “loop” is fairly self explanatory, “once” plays through once and can define a new animation to move into afterwards, “ping-pong” reverses direction when it gets to the end and continues to loop backwards and forwards. Each animation has a name and a frame rate defined, allowing different animations of a single sprite to play at different speeds.

Another planned feature is “stretch sprites”, mostly for the bars. These will allow me to define a top, bottom and middle section and stretch the middle section to make the sprite any height I need.

The Tutorials

I am going to try to write a series of tutorials covering all these subjects as I progress with the engine, aiming to release one a week for the next few weeks. The first tutorial will be about very basic game loop set up and drawing using WriteableBitmap, probably followed by the tile/map definitions. All other tutorials will come as the code gets finished or in the order requested if enough people show interest.

So, expect the first tutorial some time this week if everything goes to plan. I won’t post the entire code yet because it is currently in a pretty poor state in places, but if anybody is really desperate to see some specific part of the code for some reason, let me know and I should be able to sort it out for you.

I’ll end with a stress test screenshot showing 140 animated player sprites walking about.

That's a lot of players

AzureGale.tk

The good the bad and the ugly, I have created the basic framework for the AzureGale website. Unfortunately I haven’t set up the Registrations yet due to some laziness and the fact I don’t believe we are at that stage. “Just Yet”

In some lightened news I am working on some back end stuff to allow me to monitor every action to come with in the game. So I can determine usage, and monitor for leaks in security

I am going to go to bed and then tomorrow I will have a bunch of posting and the first tutorial will be released.

A list of phrases in Nazotte Oboeru

This list is for Nazotte Oboeru 1-1 (DS game). It’s a rather thorough list. 1-1 has 20 kanji (like all levels) and these are the ways they can come up in questions.

Unfortunately the furigana won’t come up on this. However if you download the files I have in MATERIALS, you will have furigana for most of these sentences.
